halloween in portugal

Halloween, known here as Dia das Bruxas (Day of the Witches) wasn’t something that was usually celebrated in Portugal, but recently younger generations are starting to take on the traditions from the States and the UK and you will see some organised events (usually parties around the larger cities).

Knocking on doors for trick or treat, certainly isn’t common, but you might encounter children knocking on your door on the 1st November, asking for ‘pão por Deus’ (bread for God) as the Portuguese are more likely to celebrate All Souls Day instead, it’s even a public holiday.

Children can expect to get sweets, cakes, biscuits, chestnuts and sometimes fruit. It’s part of the game to pretend you don’t have anything to give and then produce something just before they leave!
